So this weekend was spent taking part in my first ever hackathon and oh what fun it was! Getting the chance to meet some amazing female designers and developers through the Geek Girl Meetup and a chance to create an application that encourages new ways of charitable giving through The Giving Lab's API. After a great ideation session we broke into groups. Our group consisted of Helen (designer), Jenny (back-end developer) and myself (designer). Our starting point was around Friday night drinks and office culture and we wanted to come up with a way of combining this with charitable giving. We eventually came up with our project Little Battles, Big Change.
Our platform encourages you to sign up and choose a charity to support, buy tokens and compete in small challenges with your friends. Each challenge takes 1 token which has a monetary value of £1. The winner of the challenge gets to keep their token to use again but the loosing competitors tokens are donated to the winners chosen charity. The more challenges you take part in and win, the more you'll be donating to charity. This is shown through the platforms leader board where you view the people who have donated the most as well as the charities that are benefiting from Little Battles, Big Change.
We had a really good time creating this and with the help of Bea who joined our team later in the day, we puled together a great presentation with a workable marketing and financial model. This lead to Little Battles, Big Changes WINNING the Geek Girl Meetup!
I now can't wait to finish off what we have developed so far and get a working product released! Let the hard work commence.
